Instructor, Marla Vogeley:
Marla’s first experience professionally training animals was at
Animal Farm at Magic Mountain under the mentorship of two
graduates of the well known Exotic Animal Management and
Training program at Moorpark College. While working at the
Animal Farm at Magic Mountain, Marla learned the art of clicker
training, and taught pygmy goats and chickens numerous
behaviors.
Growing up with dogs, Marla was disheartened to be living in
an apartment that didn’t allow dogs, so she moved. Due to
reading several fiction books with competition obedience and
agility as plot elements, Marla knew she wanted to train dogs
for these sports as soon as she had dog of her own. Because
she was going to school full time and working full time, Marla
knew a puppy wouldn’t work. Therefore, in May of 2004, she
went to the Camarillo Animal Shelter. While her brain knew a
young dog would be well suited to begin a new life as an
obedience and agility companion, her heart lead her to adopt
the most retched dog there. A ten year old with no fur,
ruptured ear drums, an ulcerated cornea and teeth worn
down to stubs. The shelter staff was dubious that he shouldn’
t just be put down, but Marla took him home, named him
Bloom, fixed his heath issues, and discovered he was a rare
breed recently recognized by the AKC: a Polish Lowland
Sheepdog. Defiantly proving the saying, “You can’t teach an
old dog new tricks” wrong, Bloom (Marla’s Blooming
Endeavour AXP AJP CD RN) went on to enter his first agility
and obedience competitions at eleven years old. He earned
his excellent agility titles in the preferred class due to this age,
and had a relatively short career, retiring from both agility and
obedience due to deafness and other age related issues. He
earned his last title, Rally Novice, at age thirteen. Bloom
passed away five years after being adopted, and after brining
much happiness and companionship to Marla.
A year after adopting Bloom, Marla decided maybe she should
get a younger dog, since Bloom wouldn’t be able to train for
much longer due to his age. Also, Marla was hoping for a dog
that might want to play with toys, go hiking, go swimming,
and do other such dog type behaviors, something Bloom was
never interested in. In the summer of 2005, back she went to
the Camarillo Shelter, this time picking a two year old female
turned in for “escaping.” Naming her Fancy, Marla discovered
her natural athleticism made it easy for Fancy to get over six
foot block walls, but after bonding with Marla, Fancy ever had
the desire to escape. It turns out Fancy is also a somewhat
rare breed, a Tibetan Terrier. With this discovery Fancy was
able to enter AKC events and she amazed Marla with her mind
reading abilities. If Marla thought it, Fancy did it. In addition
to mind reading, Fancy also does enjoy hiking, fetching the
tennis ball, and swimming.
Two years after adopting Fancy, in July of 2007, Pie pushed
her way into Marla’s life. Marla spotted Pie on the Moreno
Valley Animal Shelter website and bailed her out to foster her
for Malinois Rescue. She never left and has been trying to
push Marla around ever since. Pie is the friendliest, silliest
Malinois on the planet.
The latest addition to Marla’s small and eclectic dog pack is
Blossom. After Bloom passed away, Marla missed having an
old dog in the house. In the East Valley Los Angeles Shelter,
a small ten year old Poodle who looked amazingly like Bloom
was scheduled for euthanasia as soon as the technicians had
time to do it. By quickly leaving work and driving like a mad
woman, Marla was able to get there in time and liberate
Blossom. He is now following in Bloom’s paw prints by
learning agility at a time when some dogs are being retired
from the sport. The obedience is coming a bit slower.
In addition to AKC obedience and agility, Marla and her dogs
also train and/ or compete in rally, USDAA agility, drafting
(pulling a cart or wagon) and the newest venture Marla and
Pie are exploring in Schutzhund.
Marla is a 2003 graduate of Oxnard College with an Associate
of Arts and “High Honors” and a 2006 Summa Cum Laude
Graduate of California State University Channel Islands with a
degree in English.
Marla is also a member of the Air National Guard and works on
base full time as an Information Manager. When not training
and competing with her dogs, Marla enjoys taking hikes,
occasional archery, and reading. But mostly she enjoys
training and competing.
